With a little creativity and advance planning; however, you can decorate your new home with great taste without spending a fortune. First, determine the style in which you want to decorate you new home. Decorating magazines can prove to be great inspiration. Be aware that some styles do lend themselves better to decorating on a budget than others such as shabby chic or even bohemian. Take the time to plan the spaces in your home so you will know exactly what you need when you begin to purchase items. Do use whatever decorating accessories and furniture you already own. Even if your existing pieces do not match your new style you can always use paint and fabric scraps to restyle and existing piece. You may be surprised at just what you can do with old pieces in order to liven up your new place. Consider all of your options regarding where to shop for your new furnishings and accessories. Thrift shops, garage sales and flea markets are excellent choices. You may even be able to negotiate lower prices at many of these venues in order to pick up a number of items quite cheap. Do not be afraid to ask your parents and friends for items which they no longer need. If they have items in their attic or basement which they are not using you may be able to pick up some great items quite cheap or even for free. Be certain to check online classifieds as well. Many people are looking for ways to get rid of items they no longer need and will give them away if you agree to pick them up. Consider using a variety of ways to create new looks such as stripping and repainting furniture, using decoupage, slipcovers, etc. If you are feeling crafty you might even consider making your own accessories from items you already own. This can be a very inexpensive way to decorate your new home for not very much money; not to mention the feeling of accomplishment you will receive when you complete the projects. If you have access to a sewing machine you might even think about sewing your own window treatments. Fabric remnants can usually be purchase quite inexpensively and it is not difficult at all to sew long seams and insert a rod pocket if you know how to operate a sewing machine. Shopping clearance sales and closeouts can also help you to find great pieces without spending a lot of money. Finally, remember to take your time and enjoy the process of decorating your new home. |
