With more than six million residents, the city of Dallas is home to numerous educational opportunities. Most of the city of Dallas lies within the supervision of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). The district is the second largest district in the state of Texasand the 12th largest district in the entire country. More than 161,000 students are enrolled in the district.

While the district is quite large several of the schools within the district have received national recognition. One of the magnet schools operated within the district, the School for the Talented and Gifted, was named the best school in the country among public schools by Newsweek. The school maintained that title in 2007. Another school in the district, the Science and Engineering Magnet was ranked as number eight in the same survey during the year 2006 and moved up to the number two spot in 2007.
