Dallas Neighborhoods

With a population of approximately six million, the neighborhoods in Dallas and the surrounding area are extensive. The city of Dallas itself is often linked with the neighboring city of Fort Worth as well as Arlington. Together, the cities are known as the DFW Metroplex by local residents. Expansion in the area has now allowed the three cities to flow directly into one another along with numerous suburbs.

When considering relocating to the Dallas area it is important to understand that every neighborhood offers its own distinctive flavor.

The West End is a historic district that is known for its strong preservation area. Buildings in the area date from the early 20th century and have been transformed into spaces for retail operation. The Swiss Avenue District is another historic area in which more than 200 homes have been preserved. These homes represent a wide range of architectural styles including Spanish, Prairie and Georgian.

In the Dallas downtown area, prospective residents will find historic buildings set against a very modern skyline. Some of the most influential and well known architects of the 20th century designed many of the buildings that cluster together on the skyline. The art scene is quite strong in the downtown area as well as performing arts.

Located just north of downtown is Highland Park, which was originally planned by William D. Cook. Today this area is a popular area in the city for residential dwellings.

One of the most upscale and popular neighborhoods in the entire Dallas area is Deep Ellum. At one time this neighborhood was the center of the African American population in the city throughout most of the last century. This neighborhood today represents the expansion of the city.

With 45 colleges and universities calling Dallas, Texas home, many neighborhoods have actually sprung up around the various campuses. This is certainly the case with Southern Methodist University, which is located just north of Highland Park and the University of Texas at Dallas, located on the northern edge of Dallas.

Uptown and Oak Lawn are located on the northeast side of downtown and has been promoted recently as an uptown area. Prospective residents looking for easy access to shopping and chic restaurants will feel right at home on McKinney Avenue as well as Knox-Henderson. This represents the current 'in' place to live. The Dallas art gallery scene has taken over McKinney Avenue while some of the finest restaurants and hotels can be found in Turtle Creek.

Park Cities is known to encompass some of the wealthiest districts in the city. Located north of downtown as well as west of Central Expressway, the area is home to some of the most luxurious homes in the city.
