About LeClaire Apartments

Once the tallest building in the entire Quad City area, the Le Claire Hotel rises 168 feet above its foundation and is often considered the most prominent visual landmark in the city of Moline. The hotel building serves as an anchor to the eastern side of Moline's downtown commercial district and forms an important linchpin in the plans of the community development office and various civic organizations attempting to preserve the historic character and economic vitality of the downtown. Originally constructed in 1921, the hotel building is supported by a reinforced concrete superstructure rising from the basement foundations to the 15th floor. The brick exterior is accented by stone veneer on the ground floor and mezzanine level, a symmetrical facade, rounded arch central facade entry with flanked arched windows, belt courses, deep projecting eaves with bracketing, and a flat roof. Although the predominant architectural style is Commercial Style Architecture, these features are characteristic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century renaissance revival style. Interior elements such as the wood paneled pier supports, checkerboard patterned flooring, mezzanine stairway marble treads, newel posts, rails, and balustrade ironwork, paneled wall woodwork, beamed ceiling and pilaster ornamental motifs executed by St. Louis artisan Fedrico Aquadro are still intact. The historically and architecturally significant building was recently designed a local landmark and is currently listed on the National Register of Historical places.
