Connecticut

Connecticut is one of the smallest states in the U.S, measuring only sixty by ninety miles, but concentrated within its borders are some of the wealthiest individuals in the country. The state is the richest based on both per capita income and median income, although this does translate into high costs for housing and apartments in the state.

Connecticut has long been a manufacturing powerhouse focusing on a variety of products, including aircraft & helicopter parts, nuclear submarines, scientific instrumentation and a variety of fabricated metals. More recently biotech and pharmaceutical manufacturing has also contributed significantly to the economy. Also central to Connecticut economics is a thriving insurance industry based around Hartford, including Aetna and ING.

Two elements of Connecticut stand out from most other states – it has some of the most important remaining colonial sites, is rich in tradition and has a true \"Old Guard\" feel to it in some of the areas that are enclaves of old money. However, the state also has a heavy Italian population due to heavy immigration in the early 1900's.

Outdoor Attractions

For such a small state, Connecticut offers a rich array of scenery. In the autumn the turning of the leaves and maple sugaring draw visitors from across the country. Crisp, fall days are one of the treasures of the reason. In the winters, temperatures regularly drop below freezing with anywhere from 20 to 120 inches of snow per season. Not surprisingly, cross country skiing is very popular.

The Long Island Sound presents plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing and simply relaxing. Clam bakes are a frequent summer weekend activity all along the coast, where lighthouses dot the landscape. The Connecticut, Housatonic and Thames Rivers provide lots of opportunities for water sports.

Colleges and Universities

Connecticut is home of Yale University, one of the most prestigious colleges in the world. The University of Connecticut and University of Hartford, along with several community colleges, round out the educational diversity of the state.

Connecticut is also home to an unusual number of boarding schools relative to its size. These offer rigorous live-in education to students from grades 7-12 or 9-12 and come with a steep price tag, but are so popular that the enrollment requirements are tougher than those at many universities.

Real Estate and Housing

There are many historically significant apartments in Connecticut housed in row houses and brownstones that have steep prices – up to 45% higher than other large cities. If you look at Connecticut apartments that are in newer high rises or apartments in the smaller cities you can find more reasonable rates.

Connecticut apartments are extremely popular with individuals who commute into New York City because they are located in areas that are more family-friendly, so commuter transportation is plentiful. For the most reasonable apartments in any of Connecticut's larger cities, consider the urban renewal areas of Bridgeport.
