Cross country skiing is particularly popular here, due in part to the Catamount Trail that runs across the state and considered one of the best cross country trails in the U.S. For fishing buffs, Lake Champlain offers year round sport, including ice fishing in the bitter cold months when snow blankets most of the state.
Colleges and Universities
The state of Vermont has a strong focus on education, with an extremely high percentage of high school graduates and college students. The University of Vermont system has five campuses, which is quite high relative to the size of the state. Champlain College is well known in the eastern states and there are fourteen other private colleges as well as various community colleges across the state. Vermont also boasts a prestigious law school.

Keep in mind when shopping for apartments in Vermont that a good heating system is essential (winters are long and cold), but that you don't need to pay extra for air conditioning, since summers are mild are temperatures rarely go above the 80's. If you love winter sports, renting an apartment in Vermont guarantees you a skier's perfect home. The best place to find reasonable apartments is Burlington, the largest city in the state; although any of the college towns will also offer good deals.
