The town of El Paso has a long and storied history that begins long before the surrounding area was known as Texas. The town was originally founded by the Spanish in 1659 but the town was fought over for many years between American settlers and the Spanish who had founded the city. For years, the remote nature of El Paso stunted development of the town. As with so many Western towns, it was the arrival of the railroad that spurred the growth of El Paso. In 1881, people from all over the new United States began to arrive. Almost perfect growing conditions, friendly people and cheap land as far as you could see kept people there and those are the very reasons why El Paso today remains such a popular spot for so many people. The cost of living in El Paso is far below the national average, which makes getting an El Paso apartment a snap!
El Paso offers many things to do to its residents year round. The local university, The University of Texas-El Paso, plays a full slate of sports and is very competitive in many of them. There is also minor league baseball, hockey and several soccer teams. Soccer is, as you can imagine, the most popular sport here, even rivaling football. The large Hispanic population impacts almost everything here, from the selection of restaurants to the music you hear on the radio. El Paso, like so many communities in Texas and in other spots like South Florida are truly multicultural.
While the city of El Paso has many wonderful qualities, the best has to be the weather. The annual temps here are very warm in the summer and cool, but not cold in the wintertime. Temperatures only drop below freezing in December and January for a day or two. Another popular aspect of the weather here is the fact that it rains so little. Sunny days are the order of the day if you live in El Paso, but it also means that you’ll need excellent irrigation if you are planning on growing anything here.
