Tennessee
Tennessee has a rich musical heritage that is home to some of the most distinctly American musical styles, including blues, bluegrass and country. Surprisingly, most of Tennessee’s population resides in major cities while the rural countryside is largely major farms and vast expanses of national and state parks. The larger cities, including Nashville, Chattanooga, Jackson, Memphis and Knoxville, are diverse and have particularly strong music venues. This is, after all, the home of country music and Elvis!
Tourism is the driving force of the Tennessee economy, with Nashville and Memphis the two biggest draws. Because these are also music centers, there are always hopefuls looking to rent apartments inexpensively while working on their musical careers. Fortunately, housing is inexpensive throughout the state.
Other important industries include chemicals, textiles and leather goods for export. Agricultural focus is on tobacco, cattle and vegetables. In recent years, more companies have been moving to Tennessee to take advantage of tax breaks and a strong urban infrastructure. Major companies located here include FedEx, Auto Zone and International Paper.
Outdoor Attractions
Tourism isn't just about music in Tennessee – there are eleven national parks or national monuments here, all rich with history or wildlife. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the U.S. and is famous for its bear population. It also offers remnants of Appalachian culture and some of the finest pine forests in the country.
Other outdoor favorites include the Natchez Trace, Shiloh National Cemetery (for Civil War buffs) and the Appalachian Scenic Trail. Wildlife and impressive vistas offer hiking, fishing, hunting and water sports across the state.
Colleges and Universities
The University of Tennessee system oversees five separate campuses, each located in major cities. There are also numerous private colleges and public universities, including several church affiliated colleges (denominations such as Baptist and Nazarene have strong educational systems in Tennessee). Vanderbilt University is in the top twenty five in the country and includes an outstanding Medical Center and research facility in Memphis.
Real Estate and Housing
The cost of living and low cost of housing make renting an apartment in Tennessee very inexpensive. In fact, most apartments rent for about 23% below the national average, so you get more apartment for your money here. If you are looking for ethnic diversity, focus on Memphis apartments; this city has the highest African-American population by percentage of any metro area in the country. Other cities that have great, inexpensive apartments include Nashville, Knoxville, Jackson and Murfreesboro.
