Oklahoma
Oklahoma is one of the most agriculturally based states in the U.S., with its economy relying heavily on farming, particularly wheat, soybean and cattle. It's also home to thousands of active oil and natural gas wells, with processing plants located near Oklahoma City and Tulsa. There aren't nearly as many people living in Oklahoma apartments as there are apartment dwellers in other states with the same population (just over 3.6 million residents) because this is largely a rural state. There are only two cities with populations over 300,000.
The few metropolitan areas rely primarily on manufacturing and processing for their economic success, along with state government offices and offices for agricultural companies. The state is also home to the largest Indian population in the country, with the capital of the Cherokee Nation located here.
The state of Oklahoma has one of the most changeable climates in the country, with the collision of southern and northern fronts frequently spawning thunderstorms and tornadoes between April and July.
Outdoor Attractions
The topography of Oklahoma includes almost every kind of terrain you can imagine, including great stretches of plains, rolling hills, mountains, prairie and evergreen forests. Three large rivers cut across the state. There are also more than 200 manmade lakes which provide excellent fishing and camping opportunities. Hunting is also a favored activity.
Storm chasers love Oklahoma, which is also the home of National Severe Storms Laboratory and the National Weather Service's Storm Predictor Center. For less unpredictable activity, Oklahoma hosts various pow-wows for several of the Six Nations and has rodeos throughout the year. The cowboy culture is present everywhere and horseback riding is a popular form of relaxation.
Colleges and Universities
Oklahoma has two distinct Boards of Regents overseeing the state universities, one for the general universities (including Eastern Central University, Southwest Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma) and one that oversees the A&M's (agricultural and mechanical universities). The ten A&M's include an outstanding veterinary medicine school and several agricultural universities.
Real Estate and Housing
Real estate prices for farmlands can fluctuate wildly depending on the area and recent crop trends, but in the cities and larger towns Oklahoma apartments are a bargain. Rent for apartments in Oklahoma is only about 75% of that found in other parts of the country, and you can find one bedroom apartments starting at less than $400 a month in many cities. The lowest cost of living of any state in the U.S. means that you can rent a great apartment in Oklahoma with no problem.
