Ohio

If you're considering an apartment in Ohio, you'll discover that there is work almost everywhere. The buckeye state is a manufacturing powerhouse that is a major provider of steel, cars, airplanes and rubber. It also manufactures a number of machine tools and parts for other end products. It is also home to many coal mines that are operational across the state.

Agriculture is also prominent since the state lies centrally in the “corn belt,” with the perfect climate for this crop. Tomatoes and soybeans are also cash crops and hog farms dot the countryside. Key to all of this is the four season weather with long springs and autumns.

Ohio is also home to some of the best medical facilities in the United States, including the Cleveland Clinic, considered one of the best treatment complexes in the world, and Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospitals. Understandably, health care is one of the most important employers in the major cities.

Outdoor Attractions

The cool to cold winters and warm summers, combined with moderate precipitation, create optimal weather for sports year round. The mountainous areas have excellent skiing and the 2,500 lakes of Ohio provide some of the best fishing, swimming and boating in the northeastern quarter of the country.

Also popular are the three major theme parks located in Ohio, which make the state a regional tourist destination. Cedar Point, Geauga Lake and King's Island all employ hundreds of residents, so there are numerous Ohio apartment complexes located near these attractions.

There are also large Amish and Mennonite communities in Ohio. These communities of religious separatists who shun modern-day conveniences produce some of the finest food goods in the country and are famous for the high quality, handmade furniture that is sold across the state.

Colleges and Universities

There are thirteen state universities in Ohio and 46 liberal arts institutions. The state also has no less than eight medical schools, including the world famous Case Western Reserve University. The state's focus on education and literacy is also evident in what is widely considered to be the best state public library system in the country.

Real Estate and Housing

Rental properties in Ohio are very reasonably priced; generally the cost of an apartment in Ohio's larger cities (such as Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Toledo) is still about 20% less than in East Coast and West Coast cities of comparable size. The overall cost of living runs closer to the national average. There are also more Ohio apartments that are on the small side (30 units are less) than in many other states – fewer high rise apartments are available except in the largest cities. This doesn't translate into a shortage – instead, the apartments tend to be located on the city outskirts instead of downtown.
