New York
New York State is the financial heartbeat of the United States, with Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange and many of the world's largest corporations all housed here. In fact, the largest part of the state's economy is fueled by finance, international trade and communications. Also very important are the publishing and fashion industries, including the manufacture of fur coats and designer clothing. The clothing district continues to be a booming area of the New York City landscape. There are more apartments in New York City itself than in any other city in the U.S.
Agriculture is also important, with cabbage, fruits and dairy all being exported to most other states. The Great Lakes region has a particularly good climate for plums, pears and peaches as well as grape vineyards. In recent years wine making has hit an all-time high and the state has won numerous awards at international wine tasting events for exceptional wines. Today only California passes New York State for wine production and vineyards.
Outdoor Attractions
The New York and Niagara Wine Trails are quickly becoming popular tourist attractions due to the increasing interest in fine New York wines and the beauty of the wine regions with their rolling hills, many lakes and seasonal foliage. The most famous water landmark, however, is the impressive Niagara Falls, which are shared by New York with Canada.
The Appalachian Valley and Adirondack Park (the largest national park outside of Alaska) both provide hiking, camping, hunting and fishing opportunities. The Hudson River is popular for boating of all types and is also extremely scenic.
Outdoor activities include skiing, fishing and camping and can be done year round. Pleasant, warm summers give way to winters that can be either relatively mild in the southeast to bitter cold in the north, particularly during the months when the Great Lakes dump what is called “lake effect” snows on these areas.
Colleges and Universities
New York State has an established higher education system called the State University of New York, which actually includes 64 university campuses across the state. Many of these have graduate schools that house students primarily in apartments, since New York universities are often located in cities where there is little room for expansion of school-owned housing. The City University of New York system is a separate system with 21 campuses of its own.
Real Estate and Housing
New York apartments are snapped up quickly because the majority of them are in the most populous city in the United States – New York City. In some of the other large cities such as Albany (the state capital) and Buffalo the search can be a bit more leisurely, but no New York apartments stay vacant for long, so do start your search willing to make a decision without too much hesitation.
The cost of apartments in New York varies sharply from those in smaller communities and mid-sized cities to those in "The Big Apple." While most apartments are costlier in New York than in any other state, some are only negligibly more expensive; those in New York City can run up to 75% higher than those in other major cities, so budget accordingly.
