Nevada
Nevada has long been known as a state for making your fortune quickly. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Comstock Lode was discovered – an incredibly rich vein of gold and silver. Today visitors try to make their fortunes at the gaming tables. The most famous gambling city in the U.S. is Las Vegas, Nevada although many other cities in this state offer legal gambling, including many resorts that also offer exceptional skiing.
Tourism is the biggest industry in Nevada, with Las Vegas' gambling, quickie weddings and divorces and legalized prostitution all contributing to the glittery appeal. Not to worry – all of these industries are strictly regulated and controlled, which is why Las Vegas remains a popular family destination as well, with great shows and activities for people of all ages.
In the past, silver and gold mining have been important to the economy, but this has fluctuated more and more in recent years and isn't as strong a contributor as it was at the turn of the last century. Cattle ranching is also important, although much of the grazing lands are state owned.
Outdoor Attractions
The mountains of Nevada are breath-taking. Locations like Lake Tahoe and Reno offer a variety of entertainment, gambling and some of the best skiing in the United States. These upscale resorts draw new residents every year who settle in Nevada apartments so that they can combine work and recreation in the clear mountain air.
On the other side of the state, the Mojave Desert is one rich with wildlife and cacti, drawing visitors who enjoy the harsh climate and wild beauty. Man-made attractions like the Hoover Dam also draw lots of visitors. One of the more unusual offerings is the Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park, one of the world’s most famous mountain bike trails, located near Boulder City, Nevada.
Colleges and Universities
Nevada's System of Higher Education oversees all state funded schools, including seven universities (two of which have doctoral programs), four community colleges, a state college and the Desert Research Institute. The Desert Research Institute is a leader in environmental research of all types.
Real Estate and Housing
Despite the booming gambling and tourism industries, the cost of living and apartment rentals are still well below the national average even in Las Vegas. Because the Vegas strip is always expanding, new Nevada apartments are being built every month to meet the demand. Reno is a smaller version of Las Vegas, and apartments in Rena, Nevada are even more reasonable (about $100 less per month per bedroom than in Las Vegas). Lake Tahoe apartments are still reasonable but a bit pricier because there aren't as many and the area is decidedly upscale. But if you want to look out your apartment window at one of the most breathtaking views of snow-covered mountains surrounding a deep-water lake, then Lake Tahoe is for you!
