North Carolina

North Carolina, famous for barbeque and tobacco, is a diverse state that is moving quickly into the twenty-first century. Tobacco is still a major industry here, but other agricultural yields include poultry and eggs. A few decades ago furniture and textile manufacturing was prominent, but today that has been replaced with electronics, pharmaceuticals and banking.

In fact, Forbes Magazine recently named North Carolina the third best state in the U.S. for businesses. Cities like Raleigh and Charlotte were also noted for being some of the best places for young adults looking for the best career opportunities. A large part of this is due to the expanding banking industry (Wachovia and Bank of America are headquartered here) and the pharmaceutical industry, including one of the nation's premier research regions – Research Triangle Park. Cutting edge medical, biotech and pharmaceutical research are all prominent contributors to the economy based on giants such as GlaxoSmithKline, Biogen Idec, Wyeth and NuFarm at Research Triangle Park.

Due to the mild weather and great outdoor locations, North Carolina also ranks third in the nation in movie productions, with only California and New York surpassing it.

Outdoor Attractions

There are thirty-four state parks and fourteen national parks in North Carolina, so there is no shortage of outdoor locations for hunting, fishing, camping and other seasonal activities. Caving and rock climbing are particularly popular here, with the Great Smoky Mountains providing excellent opportunities. Most of the rivers in North Carolina are wide and slow-moving, perfect for canoeing and float trips.

The Outer Banks, a group of barrier islands on the Atlantic Coast, draw millions of visitors each year to family resorts featuring food, festivals and sandy beaches. Golf is extremely popular in North Carolina and is played nearly year round due to the mild winters; many retirees rent North Carolina apartments for "wintering over." Historical sites such as Kitty Hawk, the Biltmore Estate and Roanoke are also popular destinations.

Colleges and Universities

The University of North Carolina System has sixteen campuses, including Chapel Hill, the first public university in the United States. Community colleges are prevalent here, with fifty-eight state-wide. Private colleges include Duke University, Elon University and Wake Forest.

Real Estate and Housing

Renting an apartment in North Carolina is relatively inexpensive – about 10% lower than the national average. If you want an apartment in Raleigh and Charlotte, you're in luck. Due to the rapid economic growth in these areas, new apartments, from one-bedrooms to luxury penthouses, are going up every year. For a charming blend of southern hospitality and metropolitan style, many people renting in North Carolina look for apartments in Winston-Salem and Durham. Wherever you rent in North Carolina, you’ll be close to plenty of opportunity as the state continues to ride a wave of growth and success.
