Kentucky
The bluegrass state is still largely agricultural, but there has been a great deal of growth in the last thirty years in other areas. Tobacco and cattle, along with goats and dairy products, are major exports from the state. The importance of agricultural and livestock is due to both the excellent climate, which is relatively mild year round, and the extremely rich soil. The breeding and training of thoroughbred racehorses is central to Kentucky's economy and culture, as is the production of bourbon whiskey.
There is also a rich vein of coal through the Eastern Kentucky Coal Fields that supplies most of the state's power with the surplus being exported primarily to Japan. In fact, the state is dotted with rich coal mines and the state's extensive river barge system makes transporting the coal much more cost effective than it is in any other state.
Automobile manufacturing is the new economic leader, second only to agriculture, in Kentucky. With several major auto plants in the state, more people are locating to the state each year and looking for reasonably priced Kentucky apartments in order to take advantage of the economic upswing here.
Outdoor Attractions
The reclaimed coal field lands in Kentucky have miles and miles of great ATV and dirt bike trails for those who enjoy a bit of speed combined with natural surroundings. In fact, the state also abounds with wildlife including wild turkey and elk that draw many hunters to the state every year. Fishing and boating are a natural result of the state being bordered on three sides by major rivers, including the Ohio, Mississippi, Big Sandy and Tug Rivers.
The Red River Gorge area is a haven for rock climbers, offering steep faces and deep ravines for truly challenging climbs. Kentucky also boasts the world's largest underground cave system – Mammoth Caves. For casual visitors and spelunkers who love to explore tightly twisting side caverns, the Mammoth Caves offer lots of variety in truly breathtaking style.
But the biggest outdoor interest in Kentucky is horse racing – the state is home to Louisville's world famous Kentucky Derby and hundreds of thoroughbred horse ranches. The gently rolling countryside and four season climate are both ideal for raising race horses.
Colleges and Universities
The University of Kentucky is the flagship of the state's eight state schools, with the prestigious University of Louisville being the second largest campus in the system. The system has solid state funding and is well respected. Private colleges include Berea, Spalding and the Asbury Theological Seminary.
Community colleges offer wide range of 2-year degrees as well through a network of sixteen different schools under the separate auspices of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.
Real Estate and Housing
Real estate and apartment costs in Kentucky vary widely depending on the region. If you want to rent a Lexington or Covington apartment you can find lots to choose from at a reasonable price. The only place in Kentucky where finding an affordable apartment might be a challenge is Louisville. Even this city has lots to offer, but the cost of the apartments will be close to the national average, while apartments in Kentucky's smaller cities can be 15-20% less expensive.
