Kansas
Kansas is home to miles of rolling wheat fields that stretch to the horizon in many areas of the state, but there is an urban side to this sunny state as well. Although wheat farming, cattle, sheep and salt mines are major contributors to the economy, this is also one of the most powerful states in the aviation industry. Airbus, Boeing, Cessna and Raytheon all have major facilities and research centers in Kansas.
Sprint Nextel, Pizza Hut and Embarq all have corporate headquarters in Kansas as well, contributing to the growth of urban areas around cities like Wichita, Kansas City and Topeka. Kansas also has a rich slice of Wild West History – Dodge City, where legendary lawmen Wyatt Earpp and Bat Masterson tamed the wilder urges of cowboys bringing cattle up the Chisholm Trail from Texas. Today western history is big business in Kansas. The state also has some major archeological sites with some of the most important dinosaur bone finds in the country.
Outdoor Attractions
You can rent an apartment anywhere in Kansas and be just a short drive from true rural beauty. The Arkansas River and Missouri River are full of wonderful fish and several preserves are home to some of the most impressive animals on earth – the American Bison or Buffalo. Kansas is dedicated to preserving the Buffalo and the Great Central Plain, which runs across the western section of the state and boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year.
In the eastern half of the state there are rolling hills and rich forests. Hunting and trapping are popular here. The state is also home to one of the most famous bird watching areas in the U.S. – Cheyenne Bottoms, the largest inland marsh and a key migratory stop-over for North American birds.
Outdoor activities in Kansas focus on enjoying nature in all its power – storm-chasing is actually a sort of amateur sport here because the state has the most severe Super cell storms in the country and numerous tornadoes every year.
Colleges and Universities
There are over two dozen community colleges throughout Kansas offering both bachelors and technical degrees. The state universities include Kansas University, Wichita State University and Kansas State University, which boasts an outstanding medical school.
