Indiana

Located next to Illinois along Lake Michigan, Indiana is also a state with a diverse economy. There are rich farmlands providing corn and sorghum, but in recent years industry has been the major cause of the state's solid economy. In the northwest in particular, steel production and a variety of manufacturing companies are crucial to the state's stability. Fortunately, Indiana is known as one of the best states for businesses in general because of the tax base and a highly skilled workforce.

Indiana's economy is not concentrated in one city; instead, cities like Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Bloomington all are home to a variety of businesses. Currently pharmaceutical and medical supplies and biopharmaceuticals are major employers, with Mead Johnson Nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly leading the way. Electrical equipment and chemical production are also big business here. Because these industries are spread out over several cities, finding an Indiana apartment in any part of the state is relatively easy – available places aren’t concentrated in any one city.

Indiana is famous for one natural resource that is shipped all over the country – Indiana limestone. Some of the country's largest limestone quarries are located here, producing some of the richest, purest veined limestone used in construction today.

Outdoor Attractions

There are miles of national forests and preserves in the state of Indiana. The Ohio, Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers all provide rich fishing (some of the best in the Midwest). Hunting and camping are also popular sports, although more so in the mild spring and fall than in the hot summers or cold winters.

For those interested in prehistoric Native American history, Indiana's Angel Mounds Historical Site is one of the most well-preserved sites in the country. The state is dotted with similar areas containing artifacts from the long-ago past. For those interested in more modern activities, Indiana is home to the Indianapolis 500, one of the world’s most famous Formula One races.

Colleges and Universities

Indiana has a strong reputation for higher education, with some of the best private and public universities in the United States. The Indiana University system has six campuses and Purdue University boasts four campuses. Also justifiably famous are Notre Dame, Ball State and Wabash College (one of only four remaining all male colleges in the U.S.). Indiana University is well known for exceptional research funding and facilities.

Real Estate and Housing

Apartments in Indiana cost about 10% below the national average and can be considerably less expensive in some of the smaller cities. If you're looking for an apartment in Indiana some of your best bets are the many college towns, such as Bloomington and Evansville, where reasonably priced apartments abound in response to an ever-increasing student population.

Many families live in apartments in Gary and other suburbs but actually work in Chicago, Illinois. These "bedroom communities" offer charming, reasonably priced apartments with a small town feel only a short train ride from one of the nation’s largest, most bustling cities.
