When you choose the perfect place to live, chances are, you use different criteria than some people. Some folks want to live by the ocean, others want year round sun. But when you can find a place like Smyrna, a town that is both near a major city and far enough away that you can live a rural lifestyle, well, you can’t do much better than that. Settled in the 1830’s and incorporated in the 1870’s, Smyrna is located in the northwest corner of what is today the Atlanta metro area. But for years, Smyrna was considered a separate place altogether, thanks to its distance from the Atlanta downtown core. Today’s population of just over 40,000 like to consider themselves both part of a greater entity, but also a separate town with its own identity. Smyrna is still very much the old fashioned South but it also a town with its ear towards the future and what it may hold for this beautiful spot on the map.
There is plenty to do in Smyrna and much of it is outside of the beltway boundries. The area surrounding northwest Georgia is some of the most beautiful land anywhere in the country. The combination of rolling hills, steep mountain sides and lush greenery makes this area perfect for hunting, fishing, hiking and biking. Even if you are just in the mood for a nice picnic under a big oak tree, Smyrna has exactly what you’re looking for. When the residents here are looking for a bit more excitement, they head on down towards Atlanta and enjoy everything that amazing city has to offer. If you’ve never visited Atlanta before, it is unlike any other city in the South. It is an ultra modern city that still manages to acknowledge and support its past. It is one of the wealthiest cities anywhere, but it doesn’t have the attitude you would imagine.
The best part about living in Smyrna is the feeling that you have the best of both worlds. Parts of Smyrna appear to be hundreds of miles from downtown Atlanta. The forests and the mountains here seem to almost hide Smyrna from the rat race going on around it. But with the excellent transportation system here, you can be in the middle of the action in no time flat. Few other spots give you that kind of flexibility.
