Founded in 1635, the town of Hartford has the reputation of being a hard working, blue collar town in between Boston and New York City. But Hartford, with its metro population of just over a million people, is much more than just a rest stop between two other, larger cities. It is a unique blend of liberal, big city ideas and a left over New England aesthetic. Hartford is considered the Insurance Company Capital of the World, but is also a city dependant on manufacturing and other blue collar jobs. It is a city that loves professional sports, but also lost its only major sports franchise, the NHL’s Hartford Whalers, to, of all places, the hockey hotbed of North Carolina. The town that bills itself as the Rising Star of New England may be overlooked by some, but for those folks that call Hartford and their Hartford apartment home, they wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
There are plenty of fun things to do in Hartford. Even though the University of Connecticut plays in nearby Storrs, the main fan center is in Hartford. Both the UCONN men’s and woman’s basketball teams have won national championships in recent years and the football program is considered to be a rising star. Hartford is also home to the one remaining hockey team in town, the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League. Since the NHL’s Whalers left town, the Wolf Pack have been one of the best supported teams in all of minor league hockey. Hartford also has many sites to see in town, including the Mark Twain House and Constitution Plaza.
The main reason why so many people move to Hartford is because of its great location, right in the middle of the east coast cityscape. Not only is Hartford a great place to call home in itself, but it also only a short drive to Boston, New York City and points south like Philadelphia, Baltimore and even Washington DC. Hartford allows thousands of folks to live near the heart of the action without having to pay extremely high rent.
