Alaska

For the rugged adventurer, there's no state that has more to offer than Alaska. It's the largest of all U.S. states and has one of the smallest populations, with less than one person for square mile. Amazing natural wonders and invigorating weather make Alaska both beautiful and perilous. The population is extremely diverse, including Native Americans, Eskimo and Inuit, and many of Russian descent. If you are thinking about looking for apartment rentals in other place besides the few densely populated cities, you'll be out of luck.

The majority of the state's economy is based on petroleum that is transported through the Great Alaskan Pipeline, with a small portion of the economy coming from the fishing industry. The rivers, seas and oceans all have cold, clear water that produces world-famous salmon, cod and crab. In recent years the state has promoted the tourism industry, with whale watching and trips to Mt. McKinley very popular. Despite that, fewer people have looked for apartments in Alaska every year until the recent upswing in the last three years indicating a recovering economy.

Outdoor Attractions

Mountains, rainforests and tundra are all part of the richest national parks and wildlife reserves in the U.S. More people fish per capita in Alaska than any other state, with hiking, camping and hunting also very popular. Cross country skiing is not only a sport but a basic form of transportation several months out of the year.

In the short summer months most Alaskans spend as much time outdoors as possible then retreat to cabins or Alaskan apartments in the cities during the bitter cold winter months, when temperatures below -50° and fewer hours of daylight prevent much movement.

One of the most popular activities in Alaska is mushing, or travel by dogsled. The annual Iditarod Race draws contestants from all over the world. In fact, sled dogs are one of the most prized possessions of native residents. With thousands of square miles or protected lands, Alaska is also home to many wildlife programs and nature photographers come from all around for the polar bear, wolf and caribou populations.

Colleges and Universities

Because populations are so sparse in some areas, the state offers several boarding schools in addition to overseeing more traditional school districts. Cyber learning is also prevalent, particularly in traditional Native American villages where they are seeking modern education while preserving the old ways of life.

The state university system includes a dozen schools, including University of Alaska campuses in Anchorage, Fairbanks and the Southeast. Sheldon Jackson College is also popular. The state currently invests heavily in scholarship programs to keep residents working in the state after getting their degrees to slow the loss of residents.

Real Estate and Housing

With most apartments more expensive than those in other states by about 40%, the last ten years have seen some change in major cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks. The military, government and United States Postal Service also offer cost of living adjustments to all salaries to combat the high cost of Alaska apartments and homes. Since groceries, fuel oil and electricity are also pricey for Alaska residents, whether in the city or in an outlying cabin, these adjustments are valuable.
